It is simply into the find yourself it actually starts to break apart, nevertheless slap-upwards finale rescues it in the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you will wisely dialogued, it’ll have no higher complications within the way of living down its extremely unappealing label.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Film Bulletin said “The movie motions within an easy rate, brand new dialogue are slick and you can characterisations fundamentally energetic. Dick Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes lead this new cast professionally, because the investigator was used big aplomb by that person identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody regarding the New Yorker listed “Which terse and you will tight movie noir is considering the fresh close and you may elite group issues of your own title character, the latest violent mastermind (played of the Penis Powell) behind a smart illegal gambling enterprise. New film’s journalist and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess online game, to have mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) spent some time working from the gambling establishment and you may old an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic program, the latest cast’s suavely regulated body language away from love and you can risk, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can stylishly assertive photo (and their political conscience) get this pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a low profile vintage of the style.” [ ten ]

Photo features motion and suspense, and you will certain brief matches out-of jokes to incorporate flavor. Ace activities from the Knob Powell, as a gambling house overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, given that a police inspector, as well as within the get . Even though the area comes after a common development, the fresh new characterizations are new in addition to performances adequate so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and topical, avoiding the emotional, phoney reach. Uncommon digital camera angles come along now and then to escalate appeal and you can temporarily arrest the interest. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling because movie director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, brand spanking new writer and member music producer, and supports rendering it a soft production.” [ 11 ]

Its mainly an issue of watching Mr. Powell proceed through his paces stylishly if you find yourself a huge shed regarding stars and you may stars give him vintage service. Evelyn Keyes performs the nice nothing woman who brings out brand new finest in him and you can Ellen Drew is the smooth and you can slinky vixen exactly who becomes him on jams. Thomas Gomez is oily because the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb do a new able trip while the an exhausted police inspector which finally shuts the actual situation. A lot of ingesting and you can smoking is performed by the all concerned.” [ 12 ]
Philp French, creating throughout the Observer told you: “That it barely found motion picture noir ‘s the chill, regulated directorial introduction of one’s remaining-wing writer who went on and come up with such classics because the Every the latest King’s Guys in addition to Hustler .” [ thirteen ]
